Atari 2600 Xenophobe Game Cartridge

(Atari - 1990)

Atari 2600 Xenophobe game cartridge.
Xenophobe came late in the era of 8-bit gaming. Invading aliens have infested the nine space stations of your planet. You must destroy the aliens and regain control of your space stations. If you fail, you can still blow up the space station to destroy the invaders as a last ditch effort. To do so you must find the secret code and take it to the self distruct console then ruuuuun!
As you make your way through the levels of the stations, pick up food and better weapons along the way. One neat thing about this space shooter is that you can play in split-screen cooperative play with a friend.
For playability this title is aces, but for a game released late in the life of the Atari 2600, I found the graphics lacking. I would rate the gameplay for this one at 7-10 and the controls a 7-10. So my overall rating of 7-10 means that this game is a fun playable diversion, especially with a friend.

$22.95 was the MSRP, is that all? I never even knew this existed until the mid '90's when my 2600 collecting obsession was at its peak. It was considered extremely rare back then and I believe I paid something on the order of $30-$40 for a loose cartridge. Neat game to collect since it came so late in the 2600's life and I love anything having to do with Aliens (fictional or not). Was never a fan of the arcade though because of its slower gameplay, although I always liked the graphics and the 2-player simultaneous gameplay. Wish they would have instituted that into the 2600 version and looks like they might have been able to pull it off since the screen is divided, just like the arcade. Oh well, still a great title all things considered. If you want a better Xenophobe gaming experience at least it exists for the 7800 where most aspects of the arcade translated fairly well.
