Atari 2600 (Darth Vader) VCS Game System

(Atari - 1982)
Atari 2600 (Darth Vader) VCS video game system
In October of 1977 Atari released the iconic 2600, known as the VCS (Video Computer System). It was one of the most successful cartridge based home video game consoles of it's day. Over the years, they released different variations of the same unit, including this one, an all black unit in 1982 that diverged from their trademarked look with the woodgrain finish. This black unit was dubbed the Darth Vader because of it's sleek black look.
The Atari 2600 was such a big piece of Americana in the late 70's and early 80's that it worked it's way into everyday vernacular as every kid either wanted an "Atari" or played with them at their friends houses and it became a generic term for a home gaming system. It dominated the market for years until 8-bit home computers like the Commodore 64 and other, more powerful, dedicated gaming consoles like the ColecoVision came into the picture.
Hundreds of game cartridges were released for the system over the years and new homebrew games are still being released by Atari fans even though the system is no longer produced. The Atari community is still going strong as witnessed by the countless forums and websites dedicated to the 2600 and other Atari systems.
I myself had never owned an Atari 2600 as a kid, but I played many Atari games at my friends houses. My father opted to buy 8-bit computers instead of a dedicated gaming console which helped mold my future as I am now a programmer by trade with decades of programming experience behind me. But I still recognize the importance of the 2600 console in gaming history... Which is why I own one now, to re-live the gaming sessions I had with my friends back in the late 1970's.
