Commodore 64 Home Computer System

(Commodore International - January 1982)
Commodore C64 Home Computer System
The Commodore 64, or C64, dominated home computer sales for over a decade and was the best selling single computer model of all time, selling over 17 million units. Hundreds of accessories and over 10,000 software titles were released for this iconic home computer that defined how we view home computing and gaming even today.
The marketing campaigns dwarfed all competitors and their price point was staggering low. Most competing manufacturers either settled for less features or took a loss on the sale of the computers, hoping to recoup the losses on accessories and programs. Commodore was able to do this by adopting a page from the Henry Ford book and controlling costs by manufacturing their own components... this was unheard of at the time.
Not only was the Commodore 64 a productivity tool with word processors and accounting programs... but it was a creativity platform for musicians with it's midi capabilities provided by its SID chip and musical keyboard accessories... or a research and experimentation platform for robot enthusiasts with accessories like the Nomad Robot and home automation products.
It also dominated the market as a gaming platform. With over 1,400 commercially released games on disk or game cartridges, it had more titles that all of the other 8-bit home computers at the time. it even dwarfed the number of titles available for dedicated gaming consoles like the Atari 2600. Tens of thousands of homebrew games have been made by Commodore 64 enthusiasts over the decades with new games still being developed including the first mutiplayer networked games now that homebrew aftermarket network adapters have been released for the system!
Commodore continued to rule the home computer market until IBM PCs, which were thought of only as business machines at the time, started lowering prices and moved into the home computing market and ultimately pushed the C64 from the throne... effectively toppling the seemingly untouchable juggernaut. In it's last days, Commodore released it's Amiga line of high end computers and a few IBM PC clones to try to stave off it's demise, to no avail.
The C64 will always have a place in my heart as it, and the Times Sinclair Computer are the computing and gaming platforms of my youth.
