Fireball Island

(Milton Bradley - 1986)

Fireball Island board game box.
Fireball Island was a visually dynamic three dimensional boardgame put out after the second Indiana Jones movie was released. Seeing the continuing popularity of the adventure genre, Milton Bradley was quick to come up with a game that filled the adventure space in the board gaming industry. Now it is one of the most sought after games of the 1980's.
Fireball Island board game box - back.
The object of the game is to make your way up the treacherous mountain passes to the Vul-Kar Idol and steal the jewel, then make it back to the docks and escape before the other players steal the idol from you or you are struck by a fireball rolling down the paths from the idol or the lava pits along the way.
Sounds simple right? Not even! There are many obstacles along the way that can land you in a smoldering pit... not to mention the cards that an opponent can play that can slow you down or have you staring up at a fireball barreling down the path at you (squish) "Ow ow ow! It burns, it burns!!!!"... and don't get me started on the rickety bridges high above the gorge!
Fireball Island gameplay.
With other features like caves that may or may not be a shortcut to your victory, no game ever plays the same twice with Fireball Island. Just beware rolling a 1 on the dice, it could spell your downfall (Insert evil, maniacal laugh here).
Not many games have a three dimensional game board... and if they do, few can compare to the fun you and your friends and family will have with this one. If you are lucky enough to find a Fireball Island game, you will not be disappointed. I give this game a 8-10 for gameplay and a respectable 8-10 for design and execution.

There are plenty of ebay sellers who offer Fireball Island replacement parts in lots fairly regularly. They unfortunately do know these parts are otherwise unavailable, and that you are at their mercy, so their prices can be steep, but at least it gives you options for completing your game.
