Sanyo Sound and Game AM/FM Radio

(Sanyo - 1983)
Sanyo Sound and Game AM/FM Radio
Sanyo saw an opportunity with emerging market for hand held video games and thought it would be a natural fit with their portable electronics they were already producing. After all, Nintendo was having great results with their Game and Watch line. Sanyo released a portable AM/FM radio with a built in LCD Basketball game (other sources online mistakenly refer to the game as soccer) and digital clock in hopes of riding the wave of electronic gaming.
The unit was ill-received with its extremely limited gameplay and the lack-luster consumer response caused them to discontinue the unit immediately. Very few made it to stores resulting in this unit being virtually impossible to find. There have only been three units reported in the wild by collectors and I was fortunate enough to luck into finding one.
While this hybrid video game seems to have failed, you need to put it into context and realize that it was a visionary project. It was ahead of it's time and technology wasn't up to the task at the time... This was a combo of music and gaming a quarter century before the first iPod.
